We have something VERY SPECIAL for you! Coming to the UK from Madrid, for 5 days ONLY, we’ve managed to book the incredible musicians that are NOU JAZZ. Experience Ethnic Mediterranean Jazz at Lincoln Jazz Cafe on Thursday, 25th August 2022, 7.30pm start.

Nou Jazz formed in 2008 in the Lavapiés neighbourhood of Madrid, a melting pot of peoples and cultures. This cultural amalgamation is one of the band’s main features, since its repertoire includes a wide range of styles and genres such as Jazz, Klezmer, Sephardic Music, Balkan Music, Flamenco, Free Improvisation, Bolero, Tango, Pasodoble, etc.

Every Nou Jazz concert is different. This group of talented friends, who share the love of deconstructing Jazz standards by pushing the boundaries of rhythm and harmony to the limit. In short, good musicians making good music.

Line-up: (on stage we’ll have 4 of these talented musicians)

Pedro Esparza (sax, flute, dulzaina): Highly regarded Flamenco and Jazz musician, Pedro has toured the world playing with artists and projects such as Gloria Gaynor, Radio Tarifa, the National Flamenco Orchestra, Carmen Linares, Manolo Sanlúcar, Enrique de Melchor. As well, Pedro has composed music for prestigious Flamenco Dance companies: Antonio Canales, Joaquín Cortés, La Yerbabuena, Joaquín Ruiz, etc, and taking this on tour.

His music compositions for the theatre play “The Blue Triangle”, gained him the Premio Nacional de Teatro award in 2016.

Carlos Blázquez (clarinet and sax): Choir and Orchestra conductor, composer, and a virtuous clarinetist. Carlos conducts choirs and teaches clarinet at the Madrid Conservatory. As well, he performs with many different top-level bands. Specialist in Klezmer music (Ashkenazi and Sephardic).

Leader of La Kabhala Band, an ambitious musical project that embraces multi-ethnic music mainly from the Mediterranean area and its fusion with other music styles (jazz, classical, free improvisation, etc.)

David García Mir (percussion): A true master in Orchestral Percussion, Jazz Drumming and Ethnic Percussion. He plays frequently at Madrid Ópera Theatre with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Madrid, various Jazz Bands and collaborates with renowned ethnic and folk musicians, e.g Xavier Paxariño. He has recorded several albums with the prestigious duet Katona Twins.

Former percussion teacher at Neopercusión School, he is now Head of Centre at Escuela Municipal Maestro Barbieri (Madrid).

Miguel Ruiz de Elvira (bass): Acclaimed TV series composer, talented multi-instrumentalist, seasoned jazz musician, professional sound engineer and many more things related to the music business.

Miguel plays with Rhythm and Blues and swing bands (Quartet Tarantino, Hollywood Band), amongst others. He is, as well, a Music Tech and jazz ensemble teacher at the Escuela de Música Creativa.

Rafael Buscalioni (piano and voice) Gifted pianist and lecturer in Physics at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. Rafa has composed music for Theatre, multimedia shows (“Modularity”, “The Genesis of Forma”) and played in several swing big bands in London as well as other jazz formations of his own (La Cortina Búlgara, Buscalioni Trio). Mr Buscalioni is involved in music collectives such as Raras Músicas (Free Improvisation orchestra), La Kabhala Band or the Hollywood Band (swing performed by a mix of jazz and classical musicians). His Andalusian background (born and raised in El Puerto de Santamaría, Cádiz) gives the band an extra spicy flavour when he sings.

Featuring: Andres Barrero, former percussionist in Nou Jazz. Based in Nottingham for a decade. Andres is Music Leader specialist in percussion at Leicestershire Music, Orchestral Percussion tutor at South Derbyshire Music Centre and freelance Drums teacher.

He has performed in the Nottingham area in venues such as Peggy’s Skylight, The Pelican Jazz Club, The Crimson Tree, etc, playing concerts with Fabric Sounds, Blue Brazil, Andrés Barrero Trio, Fritanga, Ariel Cubillas Trio or Shipstone Jazz Band. Locally, he has collaborated with wind bands and choirs and has delivered sessions at Nottingham Jazz Workshop.
